Back to the stone ages...

Well it has been an age since my last post - in this time we have moved and i have spent a week in the dark ages.... it took this amount of time for an adsl connection to be hooked up and in that time it was back the old 56k modem.... a painful experience i must say... but interesting nonetheless... it made me think back to when a 14.4 k modem was incredible... the days when BBS was king - there were no browsers and we had no email....

this time has made me think considerably on the management of information - i have spent 10 years working with business information systems and have seen a considerable progession in the tools available to create, manage and manipulate the information available to businesses - semantics to me offers the next step in the evolution of business information and business intelligence - semantics will have many applications - from simple taxonomies and ontologies for use internally in the business (for eg. in inventory management) to wider folksonomies which are becoming more and more prevalent with the rapid emergence of the social networking scene in the web 2.0 hemisphere...

14.4 is a world away from 56k which is a universe away from 1.5mbps - a quantum shift in reality.... but still at the end of the day the purpose of the bbs is exactly the same as that of the web 2.0 scene.... only the tools have become more advanced - and yet they are nothing more than a printing press... ;)

some thoughts until the next post...
